Red Velvet Curtains

The idea of red velvet curtains evokes many thoughts. Softness, luxury, sensuality and even darkness come to mind thinking of luxurious drapes in a darkened room, touching them with your hand as you pass by to feel the supple fabric.

Velvet has many associations in the mind. Perhaps for you it is your first Christmas dress as a little girl -- the one you begged your mother to buy you, even though she said it was too expensive. Maybe you think of those old Hollywood movies with the grand parties and ballroom dancing, and all the lovely women in their beautiful gowns. For me, I think of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind", taking down the gorgeous velvet curtains of Tara to create one last fantastic frock to wear as the South burned around her.

Or, perhaps, you may just enjoy the dark. Coming home from a long day at work, maybe you might want to have a bath and relax, enjoy a glass of wine or two. You could light some candles, put on some old jazz records, and when you close those velvet curtains, their weight and thickness will block out every trace of light, leaving the world outside to itself and you in all your luxurious privacy.

I would love to have red velvet curtains on my windows, to close out the world and warm my soul. To make me think back on the days of society parties and beautiful gowns, Scarlett O'Hara and Bette Davis and Greta Garbo. To give me my own little place where I cannot see out, but more importantly, no one out there can see in.
